Fiji’s Mahogany Industry Set for Major Legislative Overhaul

The Cabinet has given its approval to revisit the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica explained that MIDA 2010 creates the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 outlines the licensing and branding regulations for Fiji’s mahogany. Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, suggested a review of these laws to tackle challenges faced by mahogany stakeholders. The examination of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 is anticipated to assess the Mahogany Industry Council’s functions and facilitate the growth of the mahogany sector, while also enhancing the recognition of Fiji’s hardwood products on both local and international markets.
