Fiji’s Mahogany Industry Set for Major Legislative Overhaul

The Cabinet has sanctioned a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011).

Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica stated that MIDA 2010 was established to create the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 focuses on the licensing and branding components concerning Fiji Mahogany.

Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, suggested this legislative review to tackle challenges faced by stakeholders within the mahogany sector.

The anticipated review of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 aims to evaluate the Mahogany Industry Council’s role and facilitate the growth of the mahogany industry, enhancing the recognition of Fiji’s hardwood products both domestically and abroad.
