The Fiji Mahogany Trust Board is calling for an immediate review of the Fiji Mahogany Act, with Chairman Sakiasi Rokovucago expressing the frustrations of landowners who have faced extensive delays in the process. According to Mr. Rokovucago, the People’s Alliance party had previously promised to address this issue within the first 100 days of their term. However, nearly two years have passed without tangible progress, leaving landowning units feeling sidelined.
Mr. Rokovucago emphasized the long wait, stating, “We’ve waited 15 years for this Act to be reviewed. The People’s Alliance party promised action within 100 days, but nearly two years later, we are still waiting.” He highlighted that the ongoing delays have undermined the position of landowning units.
In a recent move, the Fiji Cabinet approved a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 and the Licensing and Branding Act 2011. A Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee has been established to oversee the process, ensuring that landowners are included through public consultations. This review is expected to be presented in Parliament by mid-March.
Mr. Rokovucago urged the Review Committee to consider key legislation from the repealed Mahogany Act 2003. Meanwhile, Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Alitia Bainivalu, confirmed that landowners would be actively engaged throughout the review process. She clarified that the Mahogany Industry operates under the Ministry of Public Enterprise, specifically governed by the Act, preventing the Ministry of Forestry from interfering.
The minister explained that the Mahogany Industry Council, which she chairs, is responsible for addressing complaints and regulating log prices. However, there seems to be a desire among certain parties to alter the regulatory framework that governs pricing within the industry.
As this review process unfolds, it represents an important opportunity for landowners to finally have their voices heard and for the necessary changes to be implemented, fostering a more equitable environment for all stakeholders involved in the mahogany sector.
Summary: The Fiji Mahogany Trust Board is urging for a swift review of the Fiji Mahogany Act due to prolonged delays affecting landowners. While the government has initiated a review process expected to be discussed in Parliament by mid-March, landowners remain cautious. Minister Alitia Bainivalu reassures involvement and input from landowners in the review. This process may pave the way for greater equity and transparency in the mahogany industry.
