A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu to aid in relief efforts following recent disasters. During a farewell event hosted by Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, team members were commended for their commitment to assist their Pacific neighbors.
Dr. Tudravu emphasized the significance of their mission, stating, “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well.” He expressed gratitude for the team’s willingness to temporarily leave their families behind to fulfill this vital duty.
FEMAT is recognized as the first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team within the Pacific Islands, equipped and trained to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters both in Fiji and throughout the region. This self-sufficient team of healthcare professionals is capable of being deployed during periods of crisis, with backing from the Australian and New Zealand governments.
FEMAT has previously provided crucial support to Vanuatu earlier this year, following the impacts of Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to disaster response and humanitarian assistance in the Pacific.
This initiative not only highlights the spirit of cooperation between Pacific nations but also showcases Fiji’s dedication to regional solidarity and support during times of need. Such efforts foster hope and reinforce the strength of community bonds across nations.
