A twelve-member team from the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu to support relief efforts. During a farewell gathering, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed gratitude to the team for answering the call to aid their Pacific neighbors.

“You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well,” Dr. Tudravu noted, acknowledging the sacrifices team members make by leaving their families and loved ones to fulfill this important duty.

FEMAT is recognized as the first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team from the Pacific Islands, specifically trained to respond to emergencies and disasters, both in Fiji and throughout the region. The self-sufficient group of health professionals, with the backing of the Australian and New Zealand governments, is ready to be deployed during times of crisis.

Previously, FEMAT assisted individuals in Vanuatu after severe tropical cyclones Kevin and Judy caused destruction in March 2023, reinforcing their commitment to providing timely aid in emergencies.

This proactive response demonstrates the spirit of solidarity and cooperation among Pacific nations, showcasing how countries can come together to support one another in times of need. The team’s endeavor highlights the importance of humanitarian efforts and the dedication of health professionals in making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by disasters.
