A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu tomorrow to provide essential relief services. During a farewell event for the team, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, expressed his gratitude for their commitment to assist their Pacific neighbors.

“You are not just representing the Ministry of Health; you are also the face of Fiji,” Dr. Tudravu emphasized. He acknowledged the personal sacrifices the team members are making by leaving their families to undertake this vital work.

FEMAT is recognized as the first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team in the Pacific Islands, equipped to respond to emergencies and disasters in Fiji and throughout the Pacific region. The team operates with the support of the Australian and New Zealand governments, ensuring they are self-sufficient and prepared for deployment during crises.

Previously, FEMAT has extended its assistance to Vanuatu, having provided help in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy in March 2023.

This initiative not only showcases Fiji’s commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian assistance but also underlines the importance of collaboration in times of crisis. The team’s efforts highlight the spirit of unity among Pacific nations, reinforcing that together, they can overcome challenges and aid those in need.
