Fiji’s Legal Storm: High-Profile Corruption Charges Set for Trial

The trial for former Fisheries and Forestry Minister Kalaveti Ravu is scheduled to take place in February next year. Ravu faces charges alongside former Regional Manager North, Tekata Toaisi.

During a court appearance today at the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou, Ravu submitted a bail variation request to allow him to travel to China. Toaisi, however, was absent from the proceedings due to a mix-up regarding the hearing date.

The first case involves allegations of corrupt practices related to false declarations by the FijiFirst Party, particularly against Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.

The second case pertains to a complaint against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem for collusion and conflict of interest, as well as against Arif Ali for making a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while he was a civil servant.

Additionally, there are complaints against the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Charan Jeath Singh. Another complaint is filed against Voreqe Bainimarama for allegedly submitting false declarations of income, assets, and liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022.

Lastly, there is a complaint against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for not declaring an overseas travel allowance.

Regarding other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections, investigations are still ongoing, and FICAC has stated it will not comment further until these investigations are complete. FICAC confirmed that it continues to operate as normal, diligently addressing all complaints, regardless of who is involved.
