Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the current Speaker of Parliament, will be the government’s nominee for the position of Fiji’s new President when parliament meets later this month. This decision comes after the incumbent President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, officially withdrew his nomination for a second term.
On October 17, 2024, Rabuka reached out to President Katonivere to seek his consent for another nomination as President and Head of State, as per section 84(2) of Fiji’s Constitution. However, Rabuka received formal communication on October 21, 2024, confirming that Katonivere had chosen to withdraw his name from consideration for the presidency.
In his statement, Rabuka also paid tribute to Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service to the nation. He commended Katonivere for his integrity and diligence as Head of State, which facilitated a smooth transition of government following the December 2022 general election. Rabuka highlighted that Katonivere’s presidency was characterized by unprecedented freedom for Fijians and represented unity and integrity both nationally and internationally. He noted Katonivere’s open-door policy at State House and highlighted the important diplomatic engagements he undertook during his tenure.
Rabuka concluded by mentioning that a formal ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame in accordance with traditional protocols at the end of his presidency to express the nation’s gratitude.
