Former Prime Minister and Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has voiced a pressing need for credible leadership in Fiji. He emphasized that strong, transparent, and visionary governance is essential for the advancement and welfare of all Fijians. Speaking at the annual delegates conference in Nadi, Chaudhry criticized the Coalition partners for failing to deliver on their promises aimed at alleviating the suffering of the underprivileged and rectifying past injustices inflicted during the FijiFirst administration.
Chaudhry underscored that the December 2022 elections saw a resounding call for change, with citizens desiring a shift towards an open and democratic system committed to the rule of law and effective governance. However, he lamented that the current government has not provided the transparency and accountability that voters expected.
He articulated that the Coalition’s neglect of crucial everyday issues and its unsatisfactory governance over the past two years have led to a significant erosion of trust and confidence in its leadership. Chaudhry pointed out the alarming trend of government mismanagement, highlighting a series of crises and scandals that have shaken the nation.
Furthermore, Chaudhry characterized today’s leadership as self-serving and disconnected from the aspirations of ordinary citizens, lacking both vision and dedication to address significant national challenges.
In contrast, he referenced the effective leadership of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in the 1970s and early 1980s as a model for success, noting the positive impacts of his governance. Similarly, he praised the Labour-led government of 1999/2000, which he claimed delivered exceptional economic growth and welfare reforms for low-income families, showcasing the benefits of a clean and competent administration that fulfilled its promises.
