Former Prime Minister and Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has emphasized the urgent requirement for effective and reputable leadership in Fiji. Speaking at the Party’s annual delegates conference in Nadi, Chaudhry criticized the current Coalition partners for failing to fulfill their promises aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the poor and rectifying the injustices experienced under the previous FijiFirst rule.
Chaudhry reminded those present that the December 2022 elections were a call for change, with voters anticipating a shift towards transparent, clean, and democratic governance which prioritizes the rule of law and good governance. Unfortunately, he noted that instead of these expectations, citizens have witnessed a lack of accountability and transparency from the current leaders.
He pointed out that the Coalition’s inability to deliver on election promises, neglect of critical issues such as the cost of living, and their troubling performance over the past two years have led to a decline in public trust and confidence in their leadership. Chaudhry described the government as repeatedly stumbling through crises, marked by numerous scandals that have destabilized the nation.
The public sentiment, according to Chaudhry, reflects a disconnection between the leaders and the common people, who perceive their leaders to be self-serving and lacking in ethical integrity. He lamented their apparent failure to address the pressing issues that citizens face today, which he believes signify a serious lack of vision and commitment.
Chaudhry contrasted the current leadership with the era of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in the 1970s and early 80s, highlighting how effective leadership can foster national prosperity and provide a record of significant achievements. He noted that during the Labour-led government of 1999/2000, the nation saw immense economic growth and effective social reform measures that supported low-income families and fulfilled promises made to the electorate.
