Fiji’s Leaders Assure Public: No Cause for Concern After Pardon of Coup Figures

The recent release of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup, and former Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit chief Shane Stevens has led to mixed reactions among Fijians. This development follows their presidential pardon after serving over 20 years in prison.

Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, addressed public concerns during a statement last night, emphasizing the importance of safety and security for the Fijian people. He reassured citizens that their safety is not influenced by the actions of Speight or Stevens.

Tikoduadua noted the progress made since the events of 2000, pointing out instances of reconciliation and goodwill among significant institutions in the country. He acknowledged that while not everyone may be pleased with the release, there is no reason for alarm.

“The process for mercy is outlined in the law. According to the 2013 Constitution, anyone convicted has the right to apply for mercy,” he explained. He mentioned that the independent Mercy Commission reviewed their cases thoroughly and followed the established process.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka echoed Tikoduadua’s assurances, stating, “You are very safe. You have nothing to worry about from Speight nor Mr. Stevens.”
