Fiji’s Lautoka Port Gets Major Upgrade: What’s Next?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently inaugurated three significant projects for Fiji Ports Terminal Limited, aimed at improving operational efficiency, sustainability, and border security at Lautoka Port.

During the commissioning event, Rabuka stated that these initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy under the transformational strategic thrusts policy, which focuses on enhancing critical infrastructure to support sustainable economic growth in the country.

The projects include maintenance dredging over 63,624 square meters, essential for maintaining the port’s depth and navigability, allowing it to accommodate larger vessels. Additionally, the development involves the creation of a container yard and a pilot boat project named “Louvaju,” which will bolster the port’s maritime control and border security, enabling operations beyond the port boundaries.

The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of these advancements within Fiji’s wider strategic vision, noting the necessity of managing the increased traffic from both east and west as it needs to be distributed among the island territories.
