Fiji’s Last-Minute Save: Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships Thrives!

The Fijian government played a crucial role in the success of the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships by providing financial assistance of $1.3 million. This support was highlighted by Fiji’s weightlifting coach, Henry Elder, following Taniela Rainibogi’s gold medal achievement in the men’s 109kg, +109kg A event on Saturday.

Elder revealed that the organization had reached out to nearly 150 potential sponsors for the event, but found that almost none were willing to contribute. Despite these challenges, he expressed satisfaction with the positive feedback received regarding the event’s organization.

“We received numerous positive comments on how the event was managed, and we owe a great deal of thanks to the government for their support in making it possible,” Elder stated. He emphasized the importance of perseverance during difficult times, maintaining faith and trust in divine guidance.

“God led us to individuals who provided essential support. Although we faced financial struggles, when it truly mattered, people and organizations came through at the last minute,” he added. Elder reassured that they would continue their efforts regardless of external support.

He expressed gratitude towards the government and the Fiji Sports Council for their assistance in logistics and operations for the championship. Over five days, the event featured 23 countries and welcomed a total of 201 lifters competing for medals at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
