The Fiji government’s timely financial assistance of $1.3 million was crucial for the successful hosting of the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. This insight was shared by Henry Elder, Fiji’s weightlifting coach, following Taniela Rainibogi’s gold medal achievement in the men’s 109kg, +109kg A event on Saturday.
Elder highlighted that the organizing committee had approached nearly 150 potential sponsors for support, but most showed little interest. Despite these challenges, he reported that the feedback regarding the event’s organization has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We’ve received a lot of positive comments on how the event was managed, and we owe the government our gratitude for making it possible,” Elder stated.
He emphasized the importance of persistence and faith during difficult times while seeking sponsorship. Elder expressed his belief that their efforts were guided by a higher power. “We were led to the right people who provided support at critical moments, despite our financial struggles,” he said.
Elder also acknowledged the ongoing support from the government and the Fiji Sports Council, which played a significant role in the operational aspects of the championships.
The five-day event featured participation from 23 countries, with a total of 201 lifters competing for various medals at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
