Fiji’s Labour Shortage: A Challenge for Growth and Innovation

Labour shortages have emerged as a significant challenge across all sectors in Fiji, particularly affecting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), according to Manoa Kamikamica, the Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, and MSMEs. Speaking at the Asian Productivity Organisation’s 65th workshop meeting held in Nadi, he noted that while the government has made substantial progress in boosting productivity through various policies and initiatives, the migration of skilled workers has created a notable obstacle to achieving national productivity objectives.

Kamikamica emphasized that the labour shortage is a pressing issue for all sectors in Fiji, particularly for MSMEs that require individuals with the right skills to complete their tasks effectively. He pointed out the loss of individuals who could potentially contribute to vital sectors such as tourism, healthcare, education, and technology.

To address this challenge, the Minister indicated that the government is focusing on establishing new industries and investing in critical sectors. This includes modernizing policies to create a more supportive business environment in Fiji. Additionally, the government has set up the Investment Facilitation Committee to assist investors and streamline the investment process.

Kamikamica also highlighted efforts to diversify Fiji’s economy and foster new industries that emphasize value addition. The Commercial Agriculture Taskforce is collaborating with several investors, such as Fiji Water and Aitken Spence, to revive the production of kava, cocoa, papaya, citrus, and cassava.
