Fiji’s Junior Kulas Set to Make History at FIFA U20 World Cup!

President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere has lauded the accomplishments of the Junior Kulas and expressed his gratitude towards the coaches, management, and the young athletes.

During a gathering held before their departure for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia, the President remarked, “This is a remarkable achievement, as it marks the first occasion that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship, and it is indeed commendable.”

Fiji, traditionally known for its prowess in rugby, is now garnering global attention for its achievements in soccer. President Katonivere highlighted that the nation has consistently “punched above its weight” on the international sports stage. He pointed out that the success of the women’s soccer team represents an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting journey.

However, he also acknowledged the challenges the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. He praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically.

“What you have done is extraordinary,” he stated, sharing his appreciation for their dedication. He further recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families and noted the significant role of team manager Naziah Ali Krishna, the wife of Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna, who is a respected figure in the local soccer community. Her involvement underscores the passion and commitment propelling the team forward.

President Katonivere assured the team of continued support from the State House, the Government, and the nation. “We will remain supportive and keep you in our prayers as you lead and mentor these young ladies representing Fiji,” he said.

The Junior Kulas will be competing in Pool B against teams including France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the country and empowering the next generation of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its football team on a global platform.

The team, coached by Angeline Chua, will commence its campaign against Brazil on August 31 at 6 PM, followed by a match against Canada on September 3 at 8 PM, and concluding with a game against France on September 6 at 5 PM.
