The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) recently completed an eight-month program focused on national reconciliation and healing. Launched in March, the Reconciliation and Restoration Program involved RFMF officers who took the time to seek forgiveness from families affected by the May 2000 coup events.
The conclusion of this initiative was marked by a somber yet meaningful celebration that included a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of those who lost their lives 24 years ago. This was followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” ceremony, which honored the families of eight soldiers who died during the 2000 mutiny, some of whom were members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
His Excellency, President Ratu Williame Katonivere, attended the event, as did Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the importance of forgiveness. He recognized the ongoing pain that past events continue to inflict on families, communities, and the broader nation.
This initiative reflects a significant step towards healing historical wounds and building a more united Fiji. The RFMF’s efforts to engage with affected families demonstrate a commitment to reconciliation, offering hope for a harmonious future. By acknowledging the past and striving for forgiveness, Fiji is paving the way for a more peaceful and inclusive society.
