The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has recently wrapped up its Reconciliation and Restoration Program, which spanned eight months and focused on promoting national unity and healing. Initiated in March, this initiative encouraged RFMF officers to engage in deep reflection and seek forgiveness from families impacted by the May 2000 coup.

The conclusion of the program was marked by a moving event that included a wreath-laying ceremony to honor those who lost their lives 24 years ago. This was followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” ceremony presented to the families of eight soldiers who died during the 2000 mutiny, many of whom served in the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.

The event garnered the presence of His Excellency, President Ratu Williame Katonivere, and was notably led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the importance of forgiveness. He recognized the lingering pain that the past events have instilled in families, communities, and the nation at large.

This program represents a significant step towards reconciliation in Fiji, fostering an environment where healing can begin and communities can come together to mend relationships strained by past conflicts. The collective efforts of the RFMF, the government, and the families involved signal a hopeful path toward unity and a shared future devoid of past grievances.
