The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is set to conduct comprehensive assessments of all jetties and related facilities, including passenger waiting areas, to ensure safety and improved services. This initiative was confirmed by Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.
Minister Tuisawau highlighted concerns regarding inadequacies at some facilities, particularly mentioning the lack of proper lighting at the Nabouwalu Jetty waiting area in Bua. He indicated a plan to incorporate solar power into these facilities as part of the overall assessment. “I have asked MSAF to carry out assessments of all jetties, including Nabouwalu, because we are looking to utilize solar power,” he stated.
Additionally, residents in Savusavu, Cakaudrove, have expressed a desire for the establishment of a government jetty that would accommodate cruise liners and facilitate easier berthing for fishermen. This proposal aligns with the government’s coalition and national development plan to upgrade infrastructure and improve tourism. “We are closely collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism on infrastructure projects, particularly the Na Vualiku Fiji Development Tourism Project in Savusavu,” he added.
He assured the community of Cakaudrove to expect positive developments in the near future, underlining the importance of feasibility studies and related assessments that are currently being undertaken for the proposed jetty.
This focused effort by the Maritime Safety Authority and the government indicates a proactive approach to enhancing Fiji’s maritime infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting local economies and improving safety standards in maritime travel. With an emphasis on sustainable solutions such as solar power and community engagement in tourism development, there’s a positive outlook for the region’s growth and safety in maritime operations.
Overall, these initiatives signal a commitment to not only improving safety and functionality for passengers but also fostering economic growth through better infrastructure and collaboration across various sectors.
