Fiji’s Innovative Push for Water and Energy Solutions

The Coalition Government is looking to enhance international collaboration to improve water services in Fiji, considering the constraints of the nation’s financial resources.

Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasized the critical link between water and energy, highlighting that effective climate financing discussions must include this water-energy connection.

He stated that for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, access to essential utilities such as water and energy is vital for the survival of local communities, which also encompasses infrastructure like roads.

Tuisawau underscored the importance of promoting water-energy initiatives at the community level to help alleviate poverty and bring about significant positive changes in people’s lives.

He called for a focus on this connection in climate financing, particularly in exploring natural spring and groundwater resources through advanced solar technology, including solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.

The Minister noted that this challenge can be tackled through innovative programs that adopt smart frameworks at the national level, especially beneficial for coastal communities.

The Coalition Government has also made notable progress in its collaboration with landowners of catchment areas, having received Cabinet approval for a new framework and policy that will provide compensation for standing trees in these zones.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to engaging with various stakeholders, particularly landowners, to address their concerns within the existing legal structures.
