Fiji’s Inmate Funeral Attendance Suspended: What’s Behind the Decision?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has decided to temporarily halt the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of close family members. This decision is part of a broader review of all operational policies and procedures aimed at improving the safety, security, and consistency of the services provided by the FCS.

For several years, the FCS has granted temporary releases of inmates to attend family funerals on a case-by-case basis, as a compassionate gesture. However, the lack of a formal policy surrounding these releases has underscored the need for a thorough evaluation.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, emphasized the importance of family and the emotional toll of bereavement on inmates. He stated that there is a need for clear and consistent guidelines that balance these human considerations with public safety and operational needs.

The review will aim to establish specific eligibility criteria for temporary releases on compassionate grounds, ensure the safety and security of both the public and inmates, minimize operational disruptions, and involve key stakeholders to reflect best practices in the policy.

“During this review period, no inmates will be released to attend funerals,” Dr. Nakarawa confirmed.
