Fiji’s Inmate Funeral Attendance Suspended: Safety First?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced a temporary halt to the practice of allowing inmates to attend the funerals of close relatives. This decision is part of a comprehensive review of all operational policies and procedures, aimed at enhancing safety, security, and the consistency of services provided by the FCS.

In recent years, the FCS has allowed inmates to attend family funerals on a case-by-case basis, considering it a humanitarian act. However, the lack of a formal policy to guide these releases has prompted the need for an extensive review.

Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, emphasized the importance of family connections and the emotional challenges posed by loss. Nonetheless, he stated that clear and consistent guidelines are essential to balance these considerations with public safety and operational needs.

The review will address several key areas:

– Establishing clear eligibility criteria for compassionate temporary release.
– Ensuring the safety and security of both the public and inmates.
– Minimizing operational disruptions caused by such releases.
– Consulting with key stakeholders to align the policy with best practices.

Dr. Nakarawa also confirmed that during this review period, no inmates will be permitted to attend funerals.
