Fiji’s Infrastructure Woes: The Need for a Strategic Overhaul

Inadequate infrastructure in Fiji stems from flawed planning and limited funding, as stated by Investment Fiji chairwoman Jenny Seeto. During a panel discussion on “Shaping the Future – Opportunities in Infrastructure” at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Seeto emphasized the necessity for the Fijian Government to properly align its priorities.

She remarked, “Infrastructure issues are rather complex and are tied to financial resources and budgeting—what is accessible and what our priorities should be.” Furthermore, she pointed out that substantial savings could be achieved among various ministries if there is a concerted effort and political determination to invest in infrastructural projects.

Seeto noted a recent interaction with the Water Authority of Fiji regarding the supply of water for upcoming projects, highlighting that political will is crucial in navigating relationships with neighboring nations such as Australia and China under the “Vuvale” framework.

Another challenge mentioned by Seeto is that investors are often pressured to contribute to the construction of roads in their development areas. She cited an example where developers tasked with creating a subdivision are also expected to build roads not just within, but surrounding the project, which complicates investment efforts.

She concluded by calling for the government to reassess its financial expenditures and priorities to enhance the attractiveness of specific sectors for investment.
