Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed more than 5,000 Fijians in Auckland during the celebration of Fiji’s 54th Independence Day at Mangere Centre Park. The event, organized by the Fijian community overseas, highlighted Fiji’s rich cultural heritage through traditional ceremonies and performances.
Rabuka conveyed his appreciation for the diaspora’s efforts in preserving Fijian traditions and promoting the country internationally. He emphasized their significant contributions to Fiji’s economy through remittances and skills, referring to them as “ambassadors” of Fiji’s values and resilience.
The Prime Minister also discussed government initiatives such as the National Development Plan, the Truth Commission, and the Foreign Policy White Paper, stressing the importance of the diaspora in shaping Fiji’s future. He reassured attendees of the government’s dedication to enhancing connections with Fijians living abroad.
The celebration included meke performances, various food stalls, and amusement rides, creating a lively and festive environment.
