Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, has reiterated his strong endorsement of using the term ‘Fijian’ as a common reference for all citizens, as mandated by the 2013 Constitution. During a workshop aimed at fostering social cohesion in Fiji, Mr. Tikoduadua expressed his firm belief in the unity of all Fijians, regardless of their ethnic or cultural backgrounds.
He firmly stated, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians,” highlighting his dedication to a united national identity and emphasizing his rejection of any efforts that could sow division among the people based on ethnicity.
According to him, embracing a collective identity is vital. He argued that no label or background should serve as a divide, as Fiji’s diversity is its strength, bringing vibrancy and resilience to the nation. “This is our shared identity, and I hold this commitment to unity at the core of my leadership,” he noted.
Mr. Tikoduadua stressed the importance of mutual respect and equality. He stated that fostering such an environment would create a future where every Fijian has the opportunity to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society. He shared his personal identity as an iTaukei Christian and emphasized that the title “Fijian” belongs to everyone collectively.
He acknowledged the critical partnerships with organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which represent a unified commitment to respect and inclusion. He expressed hope that these collaborations would guide a respectful approach that reflects Fiji’s rich cultural landscape.
In conclusion, Mr. Tikoduadua’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of embracing diversity as a source of resilience in building a cohesive society where every individual is valued as a crucial member of the Fijian family.
This commitment from the government highlights a positive vision for Fiji’s future, where collaborative efforts can help strengthen the social fabric and promote inclusivity. The minister’s clear stance on unity paves the way for fostering peace, human rights, and active civic engagement among all Fijians.
