The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has issued a strong condemnation of recent acts of violence attributed to the Fiji Police Force. The Commission highlights these violent actions as serious human rights violations that erode the trust citizens have in their law enforcement agencies.

In a public statement, the FHRADC emphasized that the police, as protectors of public safety, are obligated to enforce the law with integrity, professionalism, and respect for every individual. The emergence of troubling reports regarding the excessive use of force by police officers has raised significant concerns.

Recently, the Commission has received three complaints detailing alleged human rights violations involving police officers. One notable incident involved claims of police brutality in Nausori, where a bystander reportedly faced physical assault. In another case, a man was allegedly held in custody in the Northern division for an extended period of two weeks, during which he also suffered physical abuse. Furthermore, there are allegations of the use of force during a police interview designed to extract a confession.

In light of these serious allegations, the FHRADC is calling for an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into each case of alleged police brutality, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable. The Commission underscores that accountability is essential for restoring public trust in the justice system and for preventing similar incidents in the future.

Additionally, the FHRADC urges the Fiji Police Force to implement thorough human rights training for all its officers. Such training should focus on the importance of restraint, de-escalation techniques, and the respect for human dignity during police encounters.

This call for accountability and reform presents an opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to strengthen its community relationships and enhance public confidence. By prioritizing training and ethical conduct, the police can foster a safer and more respectful environment for all citizens, thereby contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

In summary, the FHRADC’s strong stance on the need for accountability and enhanced training in human rights reflects a commitment to ensuring that law enforcement upholds the dignity and rights of all individuals, reinforcing the hope for a more just society moving forward.
