The Fijian government’s long-term strategy aims to ensure that affordable housing is accessible to all citizens. During a meeting with stakeholders and residents in Nadawa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the Coalition Government’s commitment to addressing critical issues within informal settlements.
He noted that the forthcoming National Development Plan will incorporate mechanisms and strategies to tackle the broader challenges associated with these areas. “I don’t want to promise that the issues will be resolved overnight,” Prasad stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding the situation that has developed over the past 25 years and the agreements made during that time.
Prof Prasad outlined a path forward for addressing longstanding challenges, including helping residents secure proper land titles, improving drainage systems, and ensuring access to essential utility services like sewage, electricity, and water.
The meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Housing, Nasinu Land Purchase & Housing Co-operative Ltd, as well as local representatives. Prof Prasad proposed further discussions with all relevant stakeholders to find amicable solutions for the benefit of the residents.
