Fiji’s Homeless Crisis: A Call to Action for the iTaukei Community

The Catholic Church of Fiji has expressed concern over the increasing number of street dwellers in Suva, many of whom are identified as iTaukei. The church is actively involved in providing food packs to those living on the streets, but the rise in their numbers has raised significant health concerns.

Ben Salacakau, a representative of the Catholic Church in Fiji, emphasized the need to implement a plan to tackle the problem. He highlighted that the situation requires a collective effort from families and communities to address the growing number of iTaukei street dwellers.

Salacakau described the issue as not just a challenge for the church but also for the individual families of those affected, urging communities to take action. He noted that like many cities, Suva faces pressing concerns regarding street dwellers, and churches often feel a moral imperative to assist those in distress. This includes providing immediate aid such as food and shelter, along with long-term support like counseling and job training.

The church has organized food and nutrition programs, soup kitchens, and regular food distribution efforts to ensure street dwellers have access to nutritious meals. Salacakau pointed out the necessity of offering counseling services to tackle mental health and substance abuse issues that contribute to homelessness.

He also highlighted the vulnerabilities that street dwellers face, including risks of violence and exploitation, making their safety a priority in assistance efforts. Additionally, inadequate infrastructure for shelters and services poses challenges in supporting these individuals effectively.

Salacakau noted that social stigma and discrimination often hinder street dwellers from accessing essential services or reintegrating into society. This stigma can also affect the willingness of the wider community to support initiatives aimed at helping them.

He called for greater advocacy and awareness concerning the challenges faced by street dwellers, pushing for improved policies and support systems at both local and national levels.
