Leevan Dutta’s story in the world of hockey transcends personal ambition, embodying a long-standing family legacy in the sport. At just 27 years old, Dutta has become a pivotal player for the Fiji Men’s hockey team, which recently triumphed in the Intercontinental Cup finals, securing a decisive 6-3 victory over the Solomon Islands during the Oceania Pacific Cup hockey competition held at the National Hockey turf in Suva.

Hockey has been an integral part of Dutta’s life, deeply rooted in family tradition. “It’s been in the family for generations. My mom was the captain of the national women’s side that won gold in Suva back in 2003,” shared Dutta, reflecting on the continuity of his family’s involvement in the sport.

His commitment to hockey has propelled him to international platforms. Earlier in the year, the Fiji team performed commendably at the World Cup in Oman, finishing 15th—a significant milestone for a nation where hockey is still developing.

The recent victory in the Intercontinental Cup finals signifies a notable achievement for both Dutta and his team. He emphasizes the importance of local tournaments and international competitions being hosted in Fiji, as they present opportunities that allow players to compete without the financial burdens of travel. “International competitions at home are great for the sport. It’s much cheaper for us, as travel is very expensive, and we often have to self-fund. Local tournaments also expose more players to this level of competition,” Dutta explained.

While his personal ambitions are aligned with the team’s goals, Dutta remains focused on collective success. He expressed his dedication, stating, “My goal is simple, do my part and contribute to the team’s success.”

In encouraging others to embrace the sport, Dutta emphasized hockey’s inclusivity. “Hockey is for everyone, no matter your age. It’s a great family activity and a fantastic way to stay healthy. So come and give it a try,” he advised.

With a gold medal in hand and a steadfast determination to propel hockey to greater heights in Fiji, Leevan Dutta not only honors his family’s legacy but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes. His journey reflects the potential for growth in Fiji’s hockey scene and signifies a bright future for the sport in the country.

This narrative not only highlights individual achievement but also underscores the importance of community involvement in sports, offering hope for greater recognition and development of hockey in Fiji.
