The President commended the team’s achievements and acknowledged the efforts of the coaches, management, and the young athletes. “This is truly a remarkable achievement, as it marks the first time that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia. It is indeed a commendable effort,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

While Fiji is well-known for its prowess in rugby, it is now gaining global attention for its advancements in football. The President pointed out that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” in international sports. He highlighted the nation’s past successes in tournaments like sevens rugby and noted that the women’s football team is paving the way for an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

However, he also acknowledged the challenges facing the team, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically. “What you have done is something else,” he expressed, showing his gratitude and admiration for their dedication.

The Head of State recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families and highlighted the crucial role of the team manager, Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he added.
