Fiji’s sugarcane farmers are set to benefit significantly this Diwali season, with the government announcing a record payment of $105.08 per tonne for the 2023 crop.
The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry made the announcement, underscoring the government’s ongoing support for the sugarcane farming community.
“In line with our commitments to the people of Fiji, we continue to provide vital assistance aimed at improving the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers across the country,” the ministry’s statement indicated.
Earlier this year, farmers received a payment of $21.75 per tonne, which raised the total payment for the 2023 crop to an unprecedented $101.08 per tonne—the highest ever recorded for the sector.
While an additional payment of $2.57 per tonne was initially planned before Diwali, the government recognized the significant challenges farmers face due to climate change and opted to enhance the payout further.
To provide added relief, the government will add an extra $1.43 per tonne to the cane payment, increasing the total compensation to $105.08 per tonne, marking a historic achievement for Fiji’s sugarcane industry.
Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh highlighted that the decision to boost cane payments was a response to the severe difficulties farmers have faced as a result of climate change impacts. He emphasized that increasing production remains a critical challenge and that this payment will aid farmers in fulfilling their daily needs while also bolstering their production efforts.
“With Diwali approaching, this timely payment will give our hardworking farmers a reason to celebrate their commitment and perseverance,” Singh added.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to collaborating with farmers, industry stakeholders, and relevant organizations to ensure the sugarcane sector’s sustainability and success. Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous Diwali on behalf of the government and all sugar industry stakeholders, Singh expressed gratitude for the farmers’ hard work.
