Fiji’s Historic Soccer Journey: Junior Kulas Take on the World

Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, has lauded the accomplishments of the Junior Kulas and expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the coaches, management, and the young athletes ahead of their farewell for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia. He noted that this event marks a significant milestone as it is the first instance of a women’s team representing Fiji in such a prestigious tournament.

In his remarks to the team, President Katonivere praised their achievements, stating, “This is truly a remarkable achievement,” emphasizing the commendable effort involved. He highlighted that Fiji, known for its strength in rugby, is now gaining global recognition in soccer, with the nation regularly showcasing its capabilities on the international sports scene.

The President pointed out the challenges the team faces, including financial constraints, infrastructure issues, and lack of facilities, but he expressed admiration for the unwavering dedication of the coaching and management staff in preparing the team both mentally and physically.

He acknowledged the significant sacrifices made by the players and their families, recognizing the essential contributions of team manager Naziah Ali Krishna, who is married to Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna. Her involvement exemplifies the passion and commitment that fuels the team’s efforts.

Assuring the team of continuous support from the State House, the Government, and the nation, President Katonivere stated, “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji.”

The Junior Kulas will participate in Pool B, facing off against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents an important step for Fiji, showcasing the advancement of women’s football in the country and inspiring future generations of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its football team on the world stage.

The team, coached by Angeline Chua, will begin its campaign against Brazil on August 31 at 6 PM, followed by matches against Canada on September 3 at 8 PM and France on September 6 at 5 PM.
