Fiji’s Historic Leap into Women’s Football Glory!

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday. The President praised the team’s accomplishments and expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.

“This is a significant achievement, marking the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame said. Fiji, known for its rugby excellence, is now attracting global attention through its achievements in football. The President highlighted that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” on the international sports stage.

He also acknowledged the nation’s success in tournaments like sevens rugby while stressing that the women’s football team’s achievements are ushering in an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history. However, he recognized the obstacles faced by the team, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities.

Ratu Wiliame commended the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment in preparing the team mentally and physically. “What you have done is remarkable,” he expressed, showing his admiration for their hard work.

The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, while also highlighting the vital role of team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will keep supporting and praying for the team and management as you guide and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he stated.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the growth and development of women’s football in the country. It aims to inspire the next generation of athletes and strengthen national support for the football team on the global stage.

Fixtures in Medellín, Colombia (Fiji time) include:

August 31: 6pm Fiji vs. Brazil
September 3: 8pm Fiji vs. Canada
September 6: 5pm Fiji vs. France.
