Fiji’s Historic Leap into Women’s Football at the World Stage

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship made a traditional i-tatau presentation to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday. The President commended the team’s accomplishments and praised the coaches, management, and the athletes for their dedication.

“This is a remarkable achievement, marking the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia. It is indeed commendable,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

Fiji, known for its rugby prowess, is attracting global attention through its advancements in football, with Ratu Wiliame highlighting that Fiji has continually “punched above its weight” in international sports.

He reaffirmed the nation’s notable success in tournaments like sevens rugby, signifying that the women’s football team’s achievements are a significant new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history. However, he also acknowledged the hurdles faced by the team, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities.

Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically. “What you have done is something extraordinary,” he expressed, showing gratitude for their dedication.

The Head of State recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, and he noted the crucial role played by the team manager, Naziah Ali-Krishna. “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies representing Fiji,” he affirmed.
