The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship. The President praised the team’s accomplishments and acknowledged the hard work of the coaches, management, and the young athletes.
“This is a significant achievement as it marks the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which is truly commendable,” Ratu Wiliame remarked. Known for its prowess in rugby, Fiji is now gaining international recognition in football, with the President noting that the country has consistently excelled in various sports on the global stage.
He highlighted the nation’s successful history in tournaments like sevens rugby and emphasized that the women’s football team’s accomplishments are paving the way for a new and exciting chapter in Fiji’s sports narrative. Despite this progress, he also acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, including constraints in funding, infrastructure, and facilities.
Ratu Wiliame expressed his gratitude towards the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team mentally and physically. He acknowledged the sacrifices of the players and their families and recognized the critical role played by team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna.
“We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you guide and mentor these young ladies representing Fiji,” he stated. The Fiji U20 women’s team is set to compete in Group B against formidable opponents including France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a crucial milestone for women’s football in Fiji, showcasing the sport’s growth and its potential to inspire future generations while uniting the nation in support of its team on the world stage.
