Fiji’s Hidden Dental Danger: Unregulated Procedures on the Rise

Spread the love

The Consumer Council of Fiji is sounding the alarm about the rise of unregulated and potentially dangerous dental procedures being carried out by individuals without proper training, posing significant health risks to the public. CEO Seema Shandil noted that although no formal complaints have been received, investigations have revealed that some traders are offering dental jewelry applications at prices as low as $5.

Shandil raised concerns regarding the materials and adhesives used in these informal procedures, which can be harmful to health. “Unregulated and unhygienic practices expose consumers to severe risks, including infectious diseases, toxic reactions, and long-term health complications,” she warned. She strongly urged consumers to avoid such procedures due to their potential for life-threatening consequences.

For those who may have already encountered issues, the Council encourages individuals to report their concerns to the National Consumer Helpline at 155. Any complaints received will be forwarded to the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for appropriate investigation and action.

The Consumer Council delivered a stern warning to traders involved in these unauthorized practices, stating that they are jeopardizing public health and safety, emphasizing that such activities will not be tolerated. The Council remains committed to protecting consumer rights and prioritizing public health through diligent monitoring and enforcement efforts.

In a positive light, this issue presents an opportunity for educational outreach to raise awareness about safe dental practices and the importance of seeking care from qualified professionals. By emphasizing consumer rights and safety, the Council is taking proactive steps to protect public health and encourage informed decision-making among consumers.
