“Fiji’s Heartache: MP Addresses Controversy Over Coup Pardon”

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has stated that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians expressing their sadness and disappointment regarding the recent statement from the Mercy Commission, which suggested pardoning George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.

In his remarks, Lal indicated that this decision has reopened old wounds for many who experienced significant losses, whether related to family, livelihoods, or forced relocation for safety during those troubled times.

He emphasized that the scars from the events of 2000 are still fresh for many individuals, and he stands with them in acknowledging the deep impact these events have had on their lives and on the nation as a whole.

“As your representative, I must be candid—while I hear and share your concerns, this is the reality we face, and I lack the authority to reverse or challenge this decision. Please understand that I genuinely empathize with your suffering, and although I cannot change the past, I will continue to advocate for your voices and strive for transparency and accountability from the coalition to all Fijians,” Lal stated.
