Fiji’s Healthcare Crisis: An Exodus of Doctors

In 2022 and 2023, Fiji’s Ministry of Health experienced the resignation of 280 medical officers, leading to a noticeable shortage of senior specialist doctors. This year alone, 15 doctors have resigned.

Dr. Basharat Munshi, the outgoing President of the Fiji Medical Association, presented these statistics during the association’s 63rd annual conference at the Hilton Resort on Saturday. He expressed concern over the seniority of the departing doctors, noting that many were trained specialists. “The caliber of these individuals leaving affects us significantly,” Dr. Munshi stated.

He further mentioned that a large portion of these resignations has been attributed to doctors transitioning to the private sector, indicating a substantial outflow of talent in recent years. Dr. Munshi advocated for the Ministry of Health to conduct a survey to pinpoint the “push” and “pull” factors influencing doctors’ departures.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health, acknowledged the challenges posed by the resignations, emphasizing that they adversely affect healthcare delivery in both primary health settings and major hospitals. He pointed out, however, that the rate of resignations had declined this year.

“The pull factors are beyond our control. Improving working conditions, remuneration, and addressing doctors’ concerns over time is crucial,” Dr. Lalabalavu remarked. He added, “Even with enhanced infrastructure, human resources are vital for providing quality healthcare, and addressing both push and pull factors is necessary.”
