The Pacific Specialist Healthcare Hospital is poised to fulfill the aspirations of the Fijian Government in establishing Fiji as a prominent health tourism hub, according to founder and managing director Parvish Kumar. Equipped with advanced medical technology and a team of specialized healthcare professionals, the hospital aims to cater to the growing segment of health tourism.
Kumar highlighted the hospital’s commitment to aligning with government goals by launching a new cardiology department and successfully completing its inaugural open-heart surgery. The facility boasts 100 beds, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a cadre of highly-trained specialists, marking a significant accomplishment with the successful operation in Nadi.
In a recent operation, 61-year-old Kusum Lata underwent a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), a complex surgical procedure conducted by expert cardio-thoracic specialists, which was carried out without complications. Following the successful triple graft surgery on November 11, the patient was discharged just days later, demonstrating a smooth recovery.
Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka emphasized the importance of enhancing Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure to better serve both local residents and medical tourists. Medical tourism, characterized by individuals traveling abroad for medical procedures, has gained traction in Fiji, underscored by the country’s efforts to mimic successful models from countries like India, which regularly attract visitors seeking medical care.
In 2022, about two percent of foreign visitors participated in health and medical activities in Fiji. To stimulate private investment in the healthcare sector, the Fijian Government is providing incentives, including allowances for constructing and renovating healthcare facilities and duty-free entry for specific medical equipment.
Tourism Fiji’s CEO Brent Hill noted the significance of showcasing Fiji’s medical capabilities to patients globally, highlighting the picturesque environment that supports both pre and post-recovery processes for patients.
Dr. Ram Raju, former president of the Fiji College of General Practitioners, emphasized this achievement as a pivotal moment not just for the Nadi region, but for the entire country. He expressed optimism about the future growth potential of the health tourism sector in Fiji, suggesting that this milestone could herald a series of advancements in complex medical procedures and promote Fiji as a destination for quality health services.
This development in Fiji’s healthcare and tourism sectors holds promise for both the economy and the well-being of citizens, as it strives to become a go-to location for medical care, combining quality with the allure of a tropical paradise.
