Fiji’s Health Sector Faces Tough Times: What’s Next?

Members of the Fiji Medical Association are gathering in Nadi this week for their 63rd Annual Conference. This year’s conference addresses various challenges confronting medical professionals in the country, including the persistent shortage of doctors and nurses, Fiji’s HIV crisis, and the sustainability of healthcare.

During the event, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu acknowledged the difficulties faced in Fiji’s health sector. He stated, “It is no secret that the health sector faces many significant challenges which stem from years of neglect, especially in the areas of infrastructure, human resources, and health financing.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling these issues through collaboration, innovation, and decisive action, aiming to enhance the health and well-being of every Fijian.

FMA President Dr. Basharat Munshi echoed these sentiments, advocating for a collaborative approach to overcome the identified challenges. He confirmed that the FMA is eager to support the government’s initiatives to enhance Fiji’s healthcare system.

The conference is set to conclude tomorrow.
