The government has clearly outlined its policy priorities to tackle challenges within the health sector, according to the Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. Key focus areas include infrastructure, human resources, quality of health services, and health financing.

Dr. Atonio emphasized that the public health sector bears the majority of the health service burden in Fiji and collaborates closely with the private sector to enhance the health and well-being of all Fijians.

In terms of strengthening primary health care, Dr. Atonio announced that the ministry, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, is finalizing a public health care strategy for Fiji. This strategy will clarify the roles and functions of primary health care at all levels, particularly in addressing the prevalent communicable diseases and enhancing resilience in the health system.

The minister also highlighted two recently endorsed national policies: the School Health Policy and the Early Childhood Development Policy. Both policies were developed in collaboration with various ministries and aim to promote and protect health for children.

Regarding health infrastructure, Dr. Atonio mentioned that numerous improvement projects have taken place over the past year and a half, including upgrades to clinics and hospitals, staff accommodations, and essential services like water and power supply. Notably, a new medical boat was delivered to assist the nursing station in Visoqo, enabling better outreach to coastal communities.

Dr. Atonio addressed the significant global shortage of healthcare workers, which has also affected Fiji. Many healthcare professionals have relocated abroad or transitioned into the private sector. In response, the government has implemented various strategies, such as raising the retirement age and approving salary increases for civil servants, including doctors and nurses, to retain personnel and build a motivated workforce.

The Minister also spoke about the new National Development Plan (NDP), which is expected to guide Fiji’s development. The health ministry aims to align its strategies with the NDP and work towards establishing a resilient health system that embraces innovation and technology, ultimately striving for a healthy population.
