Fiji’s Health Crisis: The Alarming Surge of Non-Communicable Diseases

Fiji is grappling with a significant health crisis, as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are responsible for 80 percent of all deaths in the country and account for 40 percent of premature fatalities, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services.

These concerning figures reflect a global trend, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that NCDs cause 71 percent of deaths worldwide, heavily impacting low- and middle-income countries like Fiji. The United Nations notes that 85 percent of premature deaths from NCDs occur in these regions.

In Fiji, primary health challenges stem from circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancers, affecting both genders. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report from 2016 to 2021 illustrates the widespread nature of the issue with NCDs leading to deaths across all demographics.

The financial burden on Fiji’s healthcare system is substantial, with estimates placing the cost of NCD-related deaths and disabilities at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019 alone.

The causes of this crisis are well identified: unhealthy diets, tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol consumption are all preventable risk factors. Dr. Lalabalavu stresses the importance of addressing these modifiable issues.

Other countries have effectively combated NCDs by implementing comprehensive strategies, which Fiji could consider. For example, Finland’s nationwide salt reduction initiative has significantly decreased hypertension rates. Meanwhile, Australia has seen a sharp decline in smoking rates due to stringent tobacco control measures, including plain packaging and high taxes. Additionally, Mexico’s sugar tax has led to a 7.6 percent decrease in sugary drink consumption within two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is actively collecting important data to inform health promotion and prevention initiatives. However, tackling the NCD epidemic will require a united effort, robust policy measures, and increased public awareness.

It is crucial to embrace healthier choices now to ensure a healthier future for Fiji.
