Despite advancements in assessment and recovery efforts following disasters, many fundamental necessities, such as water, sanitation, and hygiene, continue to go unmet. The Fiji Health Adaptation Plan (FHAP) for the period 2024-2030 indicates that these deficiencies have exacerbated outbreaks of climate-sensitive illnesses like leptospirosis and dengue fever.

The report highlights that access to healthcare facilities poses a significant challenge, particularly for those residing in outer islands and the interior regions of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. To address these issues effectively, the six-year plan emphasizes the importance of reviewing and optimizing patient referral pathways, as well as improving transportation and communication infrastructure.

The FAHP’s implementation will prioritize infrastructure upgrades that have been identified through previous evaluations, including the Climate Hazards and Vulnerability Assessment and the self-assessment checklists for Climate Resilient and Environmentally Sustainable Healthcare Facilities. Facilities that receive these upgrades will be designated as climate resilient.

Furthermore, the existing healthcare facility improvement program, managed by the Ministry of Health’s Asset Management Unit, will be aligned with the climate resilience and sustainability goals of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) through new Standard Operating Procedures. The report also indicates a commitment to integrating environmental sustainability into all health programs managed by the Health Ministry moving forward.

Overall, the initiatives outlined in the FHAP represent a proactive approach to enhancing the resilience of Fiji’s healthcare system while addressing critical basic needs and improving public health outcomes. These efforts signal a positive commitment to building a healthier and more sustainable future for the Fijian population.

In summary, with strategic planning and infrastructure investment, Fiji aims to strengthen its healthcare delivery and enhance its adaptability to climate-related health challenges.
