Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) in Nadi has launched its new Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) services, aimed at treating chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The facility was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics, Professor Prasad.
This innovative Hyperbaric Chamber is expected to accelerate recovery for patients and significantly diminish the instances of diabetes-related amputations. Professor Prasad highlighted the seriousness of the situation in Fiji, noting that non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, are the leading cause of premature death in the country. He remarked, “There is one amputation every 12 hours in Fiji, and we need to change that.” The implementation of HBOT is seen as a pivotal advancement in improving health outcomes and reducing amputation rates.
Furthermore, the introduction of this therapy underscores Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare infrastructure. Professor Prasad expressed optimism that this new service will not only benefit local patients but also foster partnerships with regional healthcare providers and potentially attract medical tourists, positioning Fiji as an emerging hub for advanced healthcare services.
This development represents a significant leap towards better health management in Fiji, and with the right focus on public health improvement, it could lead to a transformative impact on the community’s health statistics in the future.
Overall, the addition of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy could help establish a healthier Fiji, offering hope and new possibilities for patients affected by chronic conditions.
