Fiji’s Government Vehicles Under Fire for Dangerous Driving Practices

Jone Usamate, a member of the Opposition Parliament, has expressed significant concerns regarding the operation of Government vehicles on Fiji’s roads, pointing out that they frequently disregard traffic regulations. In his statement, Usamate emphasized that issues such as speeding and unsafe overtaking by these vehicles pose a serious risk to other road users.

Usamate noted that the use of rotating flashing lights on Government vehicles during non-emergency situations is illegal. He remarked, “This is against the laws.”

He emphasized that Government vehicles are important assets vital for providing essential services. Usamate further alleged that these vehicles are often stored at private residences and community police posts during the week and on weekends, which he claims contradicts government policy.

“The Government’s Transport Policy clearly outlines the appropriate storage for vehicles, yet it seems to be overlooked, inviting potential misuse. According to the policy, ‘Drivers shall park vehicles at the agency’s official garage or car park at the end of each business day and weekends,’ except in special cases where prior authorization has been granted,” Usamate stated.

He elaborated that observing the number of government vehicles commuting from homes to offices during peak morning hours highlights the extent of the issue, as these vehicles often pick up officials along the way.

Usamate added, “Furthermore, the policy specifies that only Permanent Secretaries are permitted to utilize government vehicles. These practices need to cease, as they represent a significant drain on public resources.”

FijiLive has reached out to the Ministry of Finance, Transport, and Logistics Department for comment on these allegations.
