Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has announced that the Coalition Government is committed to tackling pornography and is considering the potential banning of certain websites if necessary.
During a recent update in Parliament regarding the National Taskforce to Address Pornography, Kamikamica emphasized the need for international collaboration and the enhancement of legal frameworks to safeguard children against online sexual exploitation.
The Deputy PM highlighted discussions among taskforce members concerning current child protection laws and the necessity for more comprehensive policies to meet the evolving challenges of the digital age.
He detailed the establishment of three working groups, each with specific aims aligned with the taskforce’s goals. The first group, which is chaired by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, will concentrate on policy, legislation, governance, and criminal justice. The second group, led by the Online Safety Commission, will focus on survivor support, empowerment, and social and cultural issues. The third group, chaired by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji, will address industry and technology responses.
“To ensure the effectiveness of our initiatives, the taskforce will implement robust mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation,” stated Mr. Kamikamica. “We will also create feedback channels for the community to contribute to our efforts, making sure we stay responsive to the needs of our citizens.”
The National Taskforce is set to meet again this month, where the Working Groups will share their findings and continue discussions on effectively addressing pornography use in Fiji. “I have made it clear in this Parliament that we are serious about our commitments, to the point where we are even considering banning certain sites, if necessary,” he added.
