“Fiji’s Government Paves Way for Open Dialogue: What’s Next?”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the increased freedom among citizens to communicate openly with the Government and its officials. He made these remarks during a meeting with farmers and residents from Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, accompanied by representatives from the Fiji Police Force and various ministries.

Professor Prasad expressed optimism, stating, “I think we have taken that fear out of the people. People are much more free now.” The residents and farmers expressed gratitude for government support initiatives, including the back-to-school program.

During the meeting, participants raised a variety of concerns, such as access to clean drinking water, rural road conditions, drainage issues, farm theft, stray animals, agriculture extension services, and health facilities. In addressing these issues, Professor Prasad noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has received a significant budget aimed at supporting not just sugarcane farmers but all farmers, including the introduction of subsidies for herbicides and pesticides.

He reassured the community of the Coalition Government’s dedication to resolving these issues promptly, particularly highlighting the increasing drug problems in Fiji that have led to more arrests. “We need to protect our schools, our children, villages, and settlements,” he said.

Additionally, Professor Prasad mentioned ongoing efforts to strengthen the Police Force and improve health services across the country. He acknowledged that while many health centers were in disrepair, progress is being made to address these challenges.

The Coalition Government plans to continue holding regular meetings to ensure community involvement in decision-making and to tackle critical issues related to community and national development.
