Fiji’s Government: Bridging Gaps and Fostering Freedom for All

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, stated that citizens now enjoy greater freedom and he emphasized the importance of open communication between the government and the public. During a meeting with farmers and residents from Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, Professor Prasad was accompanied by his team from the Ministry of Finance, as well as representatives from the Fiji Police Force and other relevant ministries.

He noted, “I think we have taken that fear out of the people. People are much more free now.” The attendees expressed gratitude for the government’s ongoing support, including new initiatives like the back-to-school assistance program.

Participants raised various concerns, including issues related to access to clean drinking water, rural road conditions, drainage, theft on farms, stray animals, agricultural extension services, medical facilities, and the impact of illicit drugs on their communities.

Professor Prasad assured the public that the Ministry of Agriculture has secured a significant budget aimed at supporting not only sugarcane farmers but all agricultural producers. He mentioned that subsidies for herbicides and pesticides are now available.

He reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to addressing these community concerns promptly. Professor Prasad acknowledged the serious drug problem affecting Fiji, noting an increase in arrests and the need to protect schools, children, and communities.

To enhance safety, he indicated that the government is taking steps to strengthen the Police Force. Additionally, he highlighted improvements in health services, pointing out that many health centers across the nation were in disrepair, but efforts are ongoing to rectify this situation.

Professor Prasad concluded by reinforcing the Coalition Government’s dedication to holding regular community meetings and fostering an inclusive approach to decision-making and resolving key issues related to community and national development.
