Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the increasing freedom among citizens and the importance of open communication with the Government, officials, and ministries. He made these remarks during a meeting with farmers and residents from various areas, including Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, alongside his team from the Ministry of Finance and stakeholders from the Fiji Police Force and other ministries.

Professor Prasad noted that the Government has successfully alleviated fear among the populace, allowing for a more open environment. The attendees expressed gratitude for the Government’s ongoing support, which includes new initiatives like back-to-school assistance.

During the meeting, community members raised issues related to access to clean drinking water, rural infrastructure, drainage, road conditions, incidents of farm theft, stray animals, and the need for better agriculture extension services and medical facilities. Additionally, they highlighted concerns regarding illicit drugs affecting local communities.

The Minister announced that the Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated a significant budget aimed at supporting not only sugarcane farmers but also those in various agricultural sectors. He mentioned the availability of subsidies for herbicides and pesticides as part of this support.

Prasad reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to address community concerns promptly. He acknowledged Fiji’s growing drug problem and emphasized the need to protect schools and communities.

The Minister also stated that measures are being implemented to strengthen the Police Force and improve health services, noting that health centers across the country are in dire need of repair. Although complete restoration has not yet been achieved, progress is ongoing.

Professor Prasad concluded by saying the Coalition Government will continue to hold regular meetings with communities to ensure inclusive participation in decision-making processes and to tackle pressing issues related to community and national development.
