Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the One China Policy, stating that it is fundamental to Fiji’s diplomatic relations. During his meeting with Li Qiang, the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing, he expressed gratitude for China’s support during times when traditional partners distanced themselves from Fiji following political upheavals in 1987, 2000, and 2006.
The two leaders addressed several key issues, including poverty reduction, infrastructure enhancement—specifically in land and maritime connectivity—and initiatives such as the Belt and Road project and rural revitalization. Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s initiative to launch a comprehensive infrastructure development program in collaboration with China to significantly improve the nation’s infrastructure in the future.
He acknowledged the benefits of the Belt and Road Initiative, specifically recognizing the assistance from the China International Development Cooperation Agency in upgrading the 82-kilometer Vanua Levu road network.
On regional matters, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to regional cooperation through the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which aims to tackle common challenges such as climate change, ocean conservation, and conflict resolution.
In response, Premier Li reiterated China’s commitment to assisting Fiji, particularly in poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He also stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation through high-quality development within the Belt and Road Initiative and actively promoting the Global Development Initiative.
